Vitalik Buterin Explains How to Achieve L2 Protocol Interoperability

Vitalik Buterin, Co-Founder of Ethereum, highlighted a number of solutions to improve Layer 2 network interoperability. He believes L2 protocol interoperability significantly impacts user experience in the Ethereum ecosystem.

Roadmap for Ethereum L2 Protocol Interoperability

Vitalik Buterin presented a roadmap to solve the problem of L2 protocol interoperability within the Ethereum ecosystem. According to his plan, it’s possible to achieve efficient operation of Layer 2 protocols in two stages.

In the first stage, Vitalik proposes to implement several EIPs that are already part of the blockchain network roadmap:

  • EIP-3370, which proposes the introduction of a new address standard. Wallets and decentralized applications will use special prefixes to display addresses.
  • EIP-7683, proposed by DeFi protocol developers Uniswap and Across, is a new industry standard that aims to improve and simplify the interconnectivity of dApps in the Ethereum ecosystem.
  • EIP-3668, which intends to standardize the method for Ethereum smart contracts to access off-chain data. The initiative will make the development of blockchain dApps more efficient and cost-effective.

As a final step in the first stage, Vitalik proposes implementing cross-L2-replayable account state updates, which he detailed in his blog post last year. Simply put, the update will ensure that L2 networks receive updates and the state of the mainnet as quickly and securely as possible.

In the second stage, Buterin proposes implementing keystore rollups and proof aggregation to improve L2 Ethereum protocol interoperability further. He also emphasized that in the second stage, all updates will depend on all rollups transitioning to ZKP technologies. According to Vitalik, the difficulty of this transition is that existing ZKP rollups will have to redesign their technology stack, which may not be realized until five years from now.

As a bottom line, Vitalik noted that L2 protocol interoperability has the potential to substantially improve user experience and drive growth in the Ethereum ecosystem.

Analysts predict the L2 protocol ecosystem on Ethereum to grow to $1 trillion over the next six years. Buterin previously suggested creating a single protocol for interoperability between L2 networks.
